Job Description
Montgomery College Rockville, Takoma Park/Silver Spring & Germantown English & Reading Departments is currently accepting applications for possible openings as a part-time faculty member teaching English and Reading. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and demonstrates the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner.

- The hiring decision for part-time faculty involves an academic judgment and shall be determined at Management's sole discretion.
- During the academic year part-time faculty at Montgomery College may teach no more than 11.5 ESH (equivalent semester hour) per semester and no more than 23 ESH per academic year.
- During summer part-time faculty at Montgomery College may teach no more than 10 ESH (equivalent semester hour) for both sessions combined.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach English composition classes and support student success.
- Teach a varied schedule of courses on campus or that may include day, night, weekend, and/or accelerated sections. Some sections of college English may also be taught at local high schools.
- Teach a variety of modalities, primarily in person but possibly also online.
- Provide students detailed written and verbal feedback on their writing.
- Grade and provide feedback to students in a timely manner to monitor student mastery and progress through a course.
- Participate in general education assessment for selected English courses.
- Complete required professional development training, which may include training in Blackboard and structured remote course delivery.
- Follow guidelines from department chair and coordinators to ensure consistent content coverage and student experience across multiple sections of a course and to ensure that course objectives are met.
- Communicate in a timely manner with students and with the course coordinators and department chair.
- Meet established deadlines to submit student mid-term and final course grades.
- Other duties as assigned by the department chair.
- As an option, part-time faculty may also serve as embedded academic coaches supporting the Achieving the Promise Academy, Montgomery College's academic coaching program, which partners with the English Department to help students succeed in rigorous college-level composition courses. Academic coaches empower students to reframe challenges, build on their strengths, and target areas for growth by embedding within course sections and partnering with the section's instructional faculty to support students. Academic coaches may serve within both remote and in-person modalities to hold group and/or individual coaching sessions outside of class and provide ongoing communication that nudges students to stay on track and access the resources they need to succeed. In addition to helping students strengthen their understanding of critical concepts and complete their coursework, embedded academic coaches use a variety of teaching, tutoring, and coaching strategies to help students develop the academic skills, knowledge, attitudes, and habits that contribute to success in their composition class and in college more broadly.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in English, Reading, Rhetoric, or a closely related field.
- Proficiency with and ability to use the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) and other web-based instructional technology to facilitate learning in a web-enhanced environment.
- Demonstrated experience teaching using a variety of delivery methods, online resources, and technology applications across the curriculum.
- Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and must be willing to contribute to the College's strategic plan of inclusion.
- Faculty members are expected to have access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus)*. Montgomery College (MC) provides an MC e-mail account and access to the Blackboard learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, college listservs, and other faculty communications tools. *If you do not have access to a personal computer, please notify the department chair at the time of interview. Subject to available funds, the college may be able to provide temporary access to resources.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States without a sponsor.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One or more years of community college English composition teaching experience.
- Online or remote teaching experience, using Blackboard, Zoom, Collaborate Ultra, and/or other educational technology.
