DESCRIPTION
The Physics Computing Facility (PCF) is a mid-sized computing recharge facility organized and managed to provide user-centered, highly collaborative, cost-effective, durable, agile and innovative solutions for researchers, academics, students and staff within the Department of Physics, the Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences; throughout the Division of Physical Sciences and across the UC San Diego La Jolla Campus. We currently manage daily interactive services for more than 400 campus users.
Offering end-to-end research, administrative and academic IT support for our clients we are able to leverage decades of campus and scientific domain expertise to offer comprehensive services including: scientific high performance computing clustering and workstation implementations, system administration and integration of computer-based data acquisition from laboratory equipment, custom OS and scientific domain application lifecycle management, storage solutions and network infrastructure design and implementation for use in department production environments and also in specialized scientific applications, web application development, user experience design, multimedia and graphic design services. We also cultivate relationships and partner with the San Diego Supercomputer Center and various Cloud Computing providers to offer flexible, scalable and cost-effective next-generation solutions. In addition to scientific computing, our expertise in campus services and networks allow us to provide secure, flexible and timely end-user support, system administration, account provisioning, infrastructure development, authentication and application/data authorization and best-practices software and hardware solutions and support. These services are available to the UC San Diego user community at reasonable consulting rates.
This position provides scientific computation and storage cluster management and primary systems support for multiple large scale and mid-scale computational physics and chemistry laboratories and serves as senior system administrator for the Physics Department. Position provides technical management for HPC cluster systems, frontend and backend servers for department and research laboratories. The research computing support responsibilities of this position include direct design, implementation and support for research cluster systems.
Analyze, specify, design and execute compiled software and scripts to address a variety of computing problems and tasks. Perform system analysis, system administration and security auditing of the Department's server, workstation and network environment. Work with complex, advanced systems and networks in a physics research environment, assist users with a wide range of technical challenges.
Manage computing infrastructure for Chemistry and Physics affiliated research groups including compute clusters, GPU clusters and file and application servers.
Must be able to move 50 pounds of equipment.
PCF managed infrastructure and the Physics Department are 24x7x365 operations. Adequate technical support cannot always be managed completely within the normal 40-hour Monday - Friday week and will require being on-call and working outside normal business hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
5+ years experience with systems administration and physics-related application software such as: LaTex, Mathematica, Matlab, NetVault Backup, vmd.
5+ years experience in general cluster administration and associated cluster networking (including high-performance networking, such as Myrinet) and installation of scientific applications.
5+ years experience in general cluster administration and associated cluster networking (including high-performance networking, such as Myrinet) and installation of scientific applications in a Rocks environment.
Demonstrated experience with multiple forms of UNIX/Linux including their integration and interoperability. 5+ years of hands-on system administration experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Experience in designing and building research-dedicated HPC systems
Demonstrated knowledge in a compiled programming lan
