Position Description: The High School Principal/CTE Director is responsible for all 7-12 educational programs including Career and Technical Education programs. The High School Principal/CTE Director shall provide leadership, guidance, monitoring and support to all instructional staff in grades 7-12 implementing Trona Joint Unified School District initiatives, curriculum, professional learning and instructional improvement programs. This position also includes concurrently serving as the principal of the Jr. High/High School and the Continuation
School program. The High School Principal/CTE Director is under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent who serves as the primary evaluator.
Essential Job Functions:
Serves as a member of the Superintendent’s Executive Cabinet.
Serves as the Superintendent Designee when the Superintendent is out of the District.
Provides direction for the development and implementation of an overall instructional program aligned to District initiatives and consistent with the established philosophy, goals, and objectives of the District.
Provides leadership and supervises all grade 7-12 programs and staff. Evaluates all grade 7-12 certificated and classified staff per the respective labor contracts.
Assists the Superintendent, as directed, in presenting the educational programs and needs of the District to the Trona Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and community.
Provides leadership to the strategic planning of the District designed to accomplish the goals of the Board, within the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), and around other essential efforts. Responsible for the annual development of the District LCAP plan and the annual high school WASC Action Plan update.
Evaluates, on a continual basis, the evolving needs of students in the District, supervises the development of short and long range plans for achieving the educational objectives of the District, and provides the Superintendent with timely, well substantiated reports and recommendations for the direction of the District’s educational programs and services.
Provides day-to-day supervision, guidance and direction to the District Counselor and Athletic Director and conducts their annual performance evaluation.
Provides leadership for the District Calendar Committee.
Responsible for the annual determination of 7-12 required instructional minutes and related bell schedules.
Responsible for CTE program development, AVID program oversight, SARB, PBIS, and PLC development as well as oversight pertaining to other programs as may be required.
Attends student academic, artistic, athletic, and social events.
Responsible for grades K-12 student discipline, supervision, and attendance.
Participates as a member of the Management Team for negotiations with labor partners.
Coordinates the 7-12 benchmark and State testing programs.
Provides oversight for CTE programs.
Works with Mountain Desert Career Pathways to expand Trona High Schools CTE programs.
Seeks additional funding for CTE programs.
Attempts to create CTE opportunities for students in non-traditional roles.
Supervises and evaluates CTE teachers and staff.
Participates in MDCP meetings, events, and activities.
Investigates and implements new CTE programs whenever feasible.
Works to create new partnerships with local industries relevant to CTE programs.
Participates in CTE industry advisory committees.
Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Education: Minimum of a Master’s degree from an accredited institution and training in the broad aspects of school administration required.
Required valid California Credentials: Administrative Services Credential and a Teaching Credential.
Required License: Valid California driver’s License.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years successful experience as a public or charter school elementary, middle and/or high school administrator desired.
Minimum of at least three (3) years of teaching experience required. Demonstrated background and experience in curriculum, instruction, professional learning, research, and leading change initiatives desired.
Knowledge/Ability: Possess a deep commitment to children and youth and their educational pursuits, thereby maintaining a student-first mindset. Committed to the successful support and implementation of Common Core State Standards, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS), Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s), Multi-tiered Systems of Support, AVID, Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and the WASC accreditation continuous improvement process. Establishes positive relationships with the Governing Board, Superintendent, Cabinet, Labor partners, staff, students, and community members. Participates in community affairs and events, encourages school business partnerships, and creates community pride in the accomplishments of students in the Trona Joint Unified School District. Demonstrates expertise and knowledge of students with special needs. Is a team leader as well as a team builder, creates confidence in students and staff, motivates others to improve education for all students, and builds engaging conditions for both student and staff learning. Maintains a collaborative style, is flexible, and enjoys working with all educational stakeholders. Possesses the attributes of honesty, openness, warmth, caring and integrity. Is adept in both oral and written communication, including effective public speaking skills.
