Job Description:

• Assist senior staff with all aspects of computer systems maintenance and administration.

• Works together with personnel to analyze system logs and identifies potential issues with computer systems.

• Performs recovery procedures, scheduling, and backups, and monitors processes.

• Works together with personnel on planning for and installing necessary patches, upgrades, and vendor recommended maintenance for servers and their associated infrastructure (including storage, network, peripheral sub-systems, etc.)

• Collaborates with personnel to configure systems and their components to maximize performance and compatibility while minimizing costs, contention, or inference with other systems.

• Respond to requests from constituents of the department including students, faculty, and staff.

• Maintains complex system and network administration functions. Works with moderate guidance to administer simple systems and assists in the administration of larger systems.

• Installs, configures, and maintains operating system workstations and servers. Performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages. Monitors and tunes the system to achieve optimum performance levels, acquiring higher-level skills in the process.

• Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:       

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.

Experience:

• Direct work experience with Linux operating systems.

• Knowledge of basic software development practices and principles.

• Ability to perform software installations, configuration, and upgrades.

• Working knowledge of common enterprise communication and management platforms.

• Experience managing networked servers and workstations with knowledge of TCP/IP network services.

• Experience with system utilities, installation of hardware, and installation of Operating Systems.

• Experience in a multi-platform network environment including client support, backup and restore technologies, Macintosh and Linux communication software support, and various graphical user interfaces.

Preferred Competencies

• Knowledge of system administration and potential issues in a large complex client/server environment.

• Understanding of intruder techniques and software exploitation methods.

• Outstanding investigative skills to identify and diagnose complex, non-intuitive technical problems.

• Ability to engage new perspectives while using existing solutions

• Ability to learn new procedures, techniques, and approaches quickly.

• Ability to effectively assist and train end users of all ability levels.

• Integrity and credibility to work with sensitive data.

• Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment.

• Detail oriented.

• Strong analytical capability.
